According to Hindu mythology, it is said that Arjuna worshiped Goddess Maa on the advice of Lord Krishna for blessings before fighting the war and the Goddess Maa finally appeared before him in the form of Vaishno Devi, pleased with his grand devotion. Seeing the manifested form of Maa Vaishno Devi, Arjuna began praising her with a shloka, one of which is 'Jambukataka Chittaishu Nityam Sannihitalaye'. Which means 'You who always reside in the temple on the slopes of Mount Jambhu'. 'Jambhu' is identified with today's Jammu. Arjuna worships Mata Vaishno Devi saying - O Mother, you are the supreme yogi, who is free from dilapidation and decay, who is the mother of the Vedas and the science of Vedanta and who is the giver of victory and the embodiment of victory itself.  On a mountain, right next to the Trikuta Mountain and in front of the holy cave, there are five stone structures which are believed to symbolize the rock of the five Pandavas.

2. The story of Shridhar and Bhaironnath, the great devotee of Maa Vaishno Devi

According to mythological beliefs, the story and glory of the Vaishnodevi temple is said to be that the temple was built by Pandit Shridhar. Shridhar was a Brahmin priest. Shridhar and his wife were great devotees of Mata Rani. Once Shridhar got the order to do a Bhandara in a divine dream. After that, he invited the whole village to the Bhandara and also invited Bhaironnath, but due to Shridhar's financial condition not being good, he started worrying about the event and, suffering from worry, he left everything to Mata Rani. In the morning, people started coming there to receive the Prasad. After which he saw that a small girl who was the incarnation of Vaishno Devi, came to his hut and started preparing the Bhandara with him. The villagers got satisfaction after consuming this divine Prasad. But Bhaironnath present there demanded meat instead of divine Prasad. But there a small girl in the form of Vaishno Devi refused to do so on behalf of Shridhar.  After which Bhairavnath considered it an insult and tried to catch that divine girl but he was not successful in doing so. After that the little girl disappeared. Shridhar was very saddened by this whole incident.     Pandit Shridhar expressed his desire to have darshan of Mata Rani. After which one night Vaishno Mata gave her divine darshan to Shridhar in a dream and showed him the way to a cave located on Trikuta Mountain, in which her ancient temple is located. Later this temple came to be known as Mata Vaishno Devi all over the world.
