Historical importance of Mahabaleshwar temple.

Mahabaleshwar temple was built in the 16th century by Chandrarao More dynasty. Later this temple was rebuilt by Maratha founder Chhatrapati Shivaji. The construction style of this temple is done in Dravidian style. The temple has a symbol of Swayambhu (self-manifested) or Lord Shiva, which is called 'Swayambhu' or 'Mahabaleshwar'. Swayambhu located in the temple complex is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. A 6 feet long Shivlinga is present in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple complex, half of which is underground. Panchganga temple is located near the temple, where the origin of five rivers Krishna, Koyna, Savitri, Venna and Gayatri is located.

According to mythology and Hindu religious beliefs, this Shivling was discovered by a pasture cow. His cow used to stop near that place every day and anoint the underground Shivling with its milk. That herder excavated that place and found Lord Shiva's Shivling. Then he informed the king of that state. And later the king gave the form of a temple to that divine place.

The self-manifested Shivling located in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is thousands of years old. There are mythological stories behind the appearance of this Shivling. Like it is found in the first and second chapters of the Samhadri section of Skanda Purana.
